L&L Edit: Reef Friendly Sunscreen
•Posted on August 18 2021
Looking after the destinations we visit on vacation starts with the decisions we make at home (and not just with our swimwear which I’m sure you’ve heard us drum on about) but also with our choices of lotions and potions we pack into our suitcase. Sunscreen is rule 101 when on vacation as now more than ever we’re aware of the lasting effects sun exposure can have on our skin, but it’s no longer just about which SPF offers the most protection against the suns rays, but which can also protect our aquatic life.
It’s been proven by scientists that ingredients contained in most sunscreen are damaging to the reefs in our oceans so it’s a no brainer putting together a Reef Friendly Sunscreen Edit to ensure that we can continue to visit our fave destinations in all their natural aquatic beauty.
The Sunscreen Ingredients to Avoid:
Nanoparticles or more commonly named “nano-sized” zinc or titanium. Basically, if it doesn’t state “micro-sized” and you can rub it in, it’s probably nano-sized.
Any form of microplastics (obviously), such as exfoliating beads commonly found in face scrubs.
Plus Oxybenzone, Octinoxate, Octocrylene, Homosalate, 4-methylbenzylidene, Camphor, PABA, Parabens and Triclosan to name a few.
